How does private duty care differ from skilled care?

VNA Northwest, Inc., is a Medicare-certified and state-licensed home health and hospice agency that provides skilled nursing, therapy and home health aide services under physicians' orders. The cost of skilled home care is often covered by Medicare and private insurance programs.

VNA Northwest Nursing Registry, Inc. is a non-medical agency that provides private duty services such as companionship, personal assistance with bathing and personal hygiene, transfers, dressing, eating and food preparation, and medications oversight.

VNA Northwest Nursing Registry can assist families seeking care support and safeguarding for a loved one. We also work closely with VNA Northwest or other skilled practitioners to provide a smooth continuum of care when a client makes a transition from skilled care to private duty home care.

"Your professionalism, calm presence, reassuring words and compassionate listening helped guide me through some very rough spots during our journey. I am sincerely grateful..." -- ML, Goshen

Caregivers referred by VNA Northwest Nursing Registry are independent contractors who have been carefully selected and screened and who meet our high standards of professionalism. All caregivers undergo extensive criminal background checks and references follow-up. They also have professional liability insurance and demonstrate compassion, respect, and professionalism.

How do clients pay for private duty services?

In most cases, private duty care (sometimes referred to as custodial home care services) is not covered by insurance. While some clients have long term care insurance, most individuals receiving private duty home care services pay privately using funds or investments saved for retirement living expenses. A small percentage of clients have coverage for these expenses through certain Medicaid programs or Veteran's benefits.

FHS SeniorCare Payment Solutions (FHS) will help simplify the payment process and help identify funding sources for those who receive assistance from caregivers referred by VNA Northwest Nursing Registry

CT General Statutes Section 20-679a Required Disclosure

As detailed in your VNA Northwest Nursing Registry Service Agreement, please be aware of the following:
VNA Northwest Nursing Registry is a homecare referral registry that connects independent Caregivers with persons who need home care. The caregiver will be working directly for you or your family and receiving your guidance and direction. VNA Northwest Nursing Registry (1) is not the employer of the caregiver, (2) will not be paying the caregiver for services, and (3) will have no responsibility for any governmental or regulatory filings in connection with the services provided. It is our understanding that most clients treat the caregiver/s providing services as independent contractors and file IRS Form 1099 to report amounts paid to them directly for services. However, depending on the relationship between you and the caregiver, you may be considered an “employer” under law and, if that is the case, you may be held responsible for the payment of federal and state taxes, Social Security, overtime and minimum wage, unemployment, Workers’ Compensation, insurance payments and any other applicable payment required under state or federal law. Please consult your tax advisor regarding your tax and filing recommendations for structuring this relationship to achieve the intended results for tax and regulatory purposes.
