Registered nurses provide a wide variety of services. They instruct patients
on managing their own health needs, including medications, diet,
exercise and management of medical devices such as a colostomy or
catheter. Nurses can provide treatments such as injections or wound
care. They can teach family members how to care for the sick or
injured and will coordinate care with other community services when
the need arises. Nurses are often called upon to explain doctors'
orders. With parents of newborn children, nurses assist with care
of the child, counsel caregivers on illnesses and help parents understand
the child's development.
