West Cornwall Covered Bridge by J. McConnell
VNA Northwest (Visiting Nurse & Home Care
Northwest) is a not-for-profit, medicare certified and accredited,
state-licensed agency providing home health care services to residents
of eighteen towns in Northwestern Connecticut. Our skilled health
care staff makes hundreds of visits every week to patients in Bantam, Bethlehem,
Cornwall, Falls Village, Goshen, Harwinton, Kent, Lakeville, Litchfield, Morris,
Northfield, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Thomaston, Torrington, Warren,
Washington, Woodbury and occasionally beyond. Anyone
may request a consultation with our staff. For on-going treatment,
a patient must be under the care of a doctor.
In 1928, many residents of Litchfield County
had no electricity in their homes; most roads were gravel surfaced
and
travel often was by horse and buggy or even sleigh when the organization
that would become VNA Northwest was founded. W. Bradford Walker,
a young Yale School of Medicine graduate, had opened a practice
in the area, and he quickly realized that his patients needed types
of medical care he himself could not provide. With fifteen prominent
residents, he founded the Cornwall District Nursing Association,
the predecessor organization of VNA Northwest. Membership in
the
association cost fifty cents; out of these humble beginnings, an
organization that would help thousands of area residents to remain
independent and in their homes was born. In 2008, that agency,
now VNA Northwest, is observing its 80th Anniversary. With pride
in our
past and boundless optimism for our future, VNA Northwest's "angels
of mercy" will continue to bring comfort to those who need
it most.
